Music of the Week: Nina Nesbitt

A musician I recently came across is Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt. Fortunately, she has three, soon-to-be four, EPs available on iTunes. I really love all her songs and they have been on constant repeat in my house. I can't stop listening. I think my favorite song is the one posted above, "Make Me Fall." I hope her success continues to grow so I can continue to listen to new music from her.

Wedding Inspiration: Centerpieces

Isn't this gorgeous? HuffPo had an article about centerpieces and I thought this was the perfect one. Apparently, it is called a manzanita branch. I absolutely love the decorative flowers and the candles hanging from the small branches. So lovely.

For those of us who suffer, this video is a great example of what it's like. I love it.

I love Whitney.

Since the sitcom Whitney premiered, the response to the show has been very divided. There seems to have been a lot of hate thrown towards the show for no apparent reason (making it seem the title of the show should be Taylor Swift), while others of us love it. I think it has really found its footing this season (I think this is something you are suppose to say when a show has gotten better over time). Watching last night's episode, where Whitney and Alex take a honeymoon trip to Alex's parents' cabin, I realized how much I have come to love the show. I really hope it gets another season. Now, aside from having some relatable characters (a woman who is basically unemployed, but has a blog she's enthusiastic about? Raise your hand everybody.), I love the dialog between Whitney and Alex and in particular how the two actors deliver it. They have great chemistry, which was really apparent in last night's episode. I also like how last week's episode dealt with Whitney's sister revealing she is transgender and is going through the steps to become a man. Seriously, how often do we see a topic like that dealt with on mainstream television? And it wasn't done in a mocking way, but was heartfelt and genuine with a bit of humor. Now, back to the dialog, here are some of the lines from last night's show that show exactly why I love it:

-"You look like a foreign flag to a country no one wants to visit." This is in response to Alex's 80's sweatsuit (speaking of, remember when Nelly released those two albums, one titled "Sweat" and the other titled "Suit"? That was...).

-"People think when you're not with me we're having problems."
"That doesn't make sense. It's when we're together that we have problems."

-"Why don't we stay in all weekend and watch the prequel to Breaking Bad?"
"Malcolm in the Middle?"
"Yes!"
This is a joke I feel not everyone watching understood, but if you did, it was excellent.

-Vegas? Am I not spending your money fast enough in Chicago?"

-"We're gonna have a lot of alone time, so you better bring extra birth control pills."
"Ok, so you just have NO idea how that works."
So it's not just Rush Limbaugh that doesn't get it. It may be all men. Yet they feel they should make our reproductive decisions? Sorry, rant over.

-"A lake house, that sounds fun. Well, fun-adjacent."

-"When did you guys get married?"
"Yes and no, we actually got tattoos instead. You probably saw mine while I was getting searched at security."
If you've seen the season 1 finale, you know that they got matching "I do" tattoos on their torsos. They're adorable. Plus, that is totally more binding than a marriage contract.

-"Somebody left the window open. That's a great way to let bats in."
"Bats? You mean baby vampires?"
WHO HASN'T THOUGHT THIS BEFORE??

-"Between the bats and the murderers, I'm gonna leave here with no blood." Cabins are scary. Too many horror stories have taken place there.

So, if any of these quotes made you laugh and you haven't seen Whitney yet, please take a look. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

UPDATE: Whitney's been cancelled. :(

TBT- Movie Edition: Never Been Kissed

Let's be honest, the late nineties provided some of the greatest rom-coms in the history of cinema (as did the whole of the 80's). One of these lovely gems is the Drew Barrymore film "Never Been Kissed." When I first saw this film, I was a young teen and could relate to the title and some of what the main character had gone through in high school. If you've never seen the film, it is about a twenty-five year-old who gets her first shot a being a reporter, instead of just a copy editor, by going undercover as a high school student and trying to discover what life is like for these teens by living amongst them. Her time in high school was not very pleasant, so this is her second chance. If that doesn't make you want to watch it then I'll throw in you get to see a slightly inappropriate relationship develop between the main character and her teacher (remember, she's pretending to be seventeen). You also get a lovely collection of characters the cover different stereotypical high school characters. There are also lovely 80's flashbacks with Madonna music. There, now you have to watch it. If you've already seen it, it's time to re-watch.

New Music Release: Ashley Monroe- Like a Rose

One of my albums of the week is the new release from country artist Ashley Monroe. The nine-track album titled "Like a Rose" is a straight country album with a great mix of songs.

Track 1: Like a Rose- the title track is about turning out ok (like a rose) even though you have had problems throughout your life- dad abandons family, mom drank, left with boyfriend when you were 18, etc. Pretty standard country material.

Track 2: Two weeks late- this song is about what you think it is: she's pregnant, out of wedlock, and he's left her. It's the talk of the town. A clear country song!

Track 3: Used- about feeling used by guys, but that doesn't mean you aren't worth anything, a.k.a you are worth a whole lot more used. A standard melancholy country tune.

Track 4: Weed instead of Roses- one of my favorite tracks. The title explains it all: she doesn't want cliche items. I would call it a different type of love song (there's some fifty shades of grey going on in the song).

Track 5: You got me- My other favorite track. It's a mellow song about needing to be with that someone.

Track 6: The morning after- about dealing with the aftermath of a drunken "oopsie" hook-up. Fairly accurate portrayal (except seventeen is a little young...).

Track 7: Monroe Suede- upbeat song about being a "fast" girl- always on the run and breaking hearts.

Track 8: She's driving me out of your mind- watching the one you want to be with going with another girl.

Track 9: You ain't Dolly (and you ain't Porter)- A fun Blake Shelton duet. Basically telling the other they don't live up to the title characters, but they'll settle for each other anyways.

I just can't get you outta my head...

I have had this song stuck in my head all week. It won't leave! "I wanna walk like you, talk like you..."

Etsy find of the week!

TBT: Movie Edition

I love 80's movies. End of story. No, but I really do love 80's movies and the list is long of the ones I love. I decided for "throwback thursday" that I would acknowledge one of my favorite 80's movies. This would be the movie: Clue. Now, if you have not seen this movie, you are really missing out. Yes, it is based on the classic board game Clue. That's really what makes this so great. You have all the players (Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Professor Plum, Mrs. Peacock, and Mr. Green) and there are some additional characters as well, such as Wadsworth, Mr. Boddy, and Yvette. Some of the best actors are in the film as well, including Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Brennan, Madeline Kahn, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren. I won't spoil any of it though. The one thing I will say is that when it was originally released in theaters, audiences saw one of three endings. You get to see what all three endings are in the video-released version. Oh, and if you are a Netflix user, it is currently streaming on their site, so you can watch it RIGHT NOW. If you haven't seen it, I recommend watching it. If you have seen it, go ahead and watch it again because it is SO GOOD. Enjoy.

Song of the Moment: Never Wanted Your Love

New She & Him! I repeat, NEW She & Him! Loving this song...it's on iTunes already. I can't wait for May 7th (album release)!

Everybody wants to be a cat...

...because a cat's the only cat, who knows where it's at...
I constantly sing this song to my cats. I really hope I'm not the only one...

Shopping Discovery: Warby Parker Home Try On

One of my favorite shopping discoveries is the Warby Parker Home Try On. Warby Parker is an online retailer that sells prescription glasses and sunglasses. Now, seeing that it is difficult to buy glasses without having tried them on, the company has offered an option to help reduce the risk. This wonderful service is the home try on. You get to pick out five frames that you are interested in and they send them to you to try out for five days FOR FREE. They come nicely packaged in a box with return labels that make it easy to ship back. This way you get to see if any of the frames work prior to making the purchase. Given that the frames are $95, this is a helpful service. If you do decide you like one of the frames, you can order them with your prescription. So, if you are in the market for new glasses, I recommend checking out this service.

Song of the moment: Let Her Go- Passenger

This song recently popped up on one of my Pandora stations and I really like it. It's been on constant rotation for me and luckily there is a full album to enjoy!

These are a few of my favorite things: Dress Edition

                                                                                               source: glamour.com

I love tulle and sequins. So this dress is one of my favorites. This is the Marchesa dress Olivia Wilde wore to the 2011 Golden Globe awards and I've been obsessed with it ever since. It's stunning. Anyways, here is a dress that adds a little bit of sparkle to your life simply by staring at it.

I plan on incorporating this word into my everyday vocabulary.

VOTD- Harlem Shake: Elderly Edition

A retirement center in my hometown made a Harlem Shake Video. I repeat, this is a video of the elderly doing the Harlem Shake. Enjoy.

Okay, I'll admit it, I want a Cinderella wedding

This photo is from the opening night party for Broadway's new musical Rodgers and Hammerstein's  Cinderella. I am always on the lookout for inspiration for the wedding I'm convinced I'll NEVER have and this photo is being added to that collection. I think it is stunning and now want to use Candelabras as centerpieces for every party. Check out more gorgeous photos from the party (like the ice sculpture glass slipper!).
